PUNA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island police detectives ruled the 2022 death of a 5-month-old girl in Puna as a homicide.

Police officials say they’ve sent the murder investigation to the County Prosecutor’s office for review.

Hawaii Island police officials identified the victim as 5-month-old Makia Alameda of Kalapana.

Police say Makia Alameda was unresponsive when her mother called 911 on New Year’s Eve in 2022.

Makia’s mother and her boyfriend tried to rush the infant to the Pahoa Fire Station.

Officials say rescue crews met them near Leilani Estates to treat the baby, but Makia later died.

Police say an autopsy performed in 2023 ruled her death a homicide caused by asphyxia.

The autopsy also detailed that she also had new and old blunt force injuries.

Police recently received the final autopsy report and have forwarded the case to prosecutors for review.
