Hawaii hopes stricter laws will quiet illegal fireworks after deadly New Year's Eve blast
Hawaii authorities are cracking down on illegal fireworks after a tragic explosion last New Year's Eve killed six people. Hawaii's Department of Law Enforcement Director, Mike Lambert, has seen fewer illegal fireworks exploding in his suburban Honolulu neighborhood in months following a deadly New Year's Eve blast that led to six deaths, including a 3-year-old boy. This year, authorities have implemented stricter laws in response to the tragedy, including $300 tickets for those who shoot off fireworks, repeat offenders and those whose actions cause serious injury or death could face prison time for felony crimes. The new laws were created following the tragedy that left six people dead at a New Year’s Eve party in which crates of illegal fireworks tipped over and ignited in the Aliamanu neighborhood. As of earlier this month, Honolulu police had issued 10 fireworks citations, an improvement from zero in past years. The department has also increased searches at all ports and is working with prosecutors in seeking charges against those responsible for the accidents.
