Letter: Let private builders play a role in affordability

Politicians promise to make housing more affordable, but I believe it’s impossible for government to deliver on that promise. Politicians and bureaucrats spend taxpayers’ money, not their own. When costs rise, they can seek more taxes or borrow more money. Too often, they act as though the public’s wallet has no bottom. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser has published a letter asking for private builders to play a role in housing affordability. The author argues that it is impossible for government to deliver on this promise, as politicians and bureaucrats often spend taxpayers' money, not their own, when costs rise. He argues that private builders face a financial incentive to control expenses and avoid waste. Instead, government should remove unnecessary rules, shorten permit delays and allow builders to build. The newspaper welcomes all opinions and welcomes guest columns of up to 600 words.
