How 100-year-old Aloha Tower became the ‘Queen of Honolulu Harbor’
Long before Aloha Tower, it was Kuloloia — a place to fish, launch canoes and do business. Now, after an $8.5 million makeover, the "Queen of Honolulu Harbor" shines again. Aloha Tower, a 100-year-old landmark in Honolulu, was built to welcome passengers on passenger ships and symbolize the rich maritime history of the area. The building was completed in 1926 and has since stood as a reminder of the importance of sea transportation to Hawaiʻi's economy. The harbor was also the hub of economic and military activity in the 1800s, when Fort Kekuanohu was built. In 1881, a diplomatic voyage was launched to establish international relations to protect the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hawaiʘi. Over the years, Honolulu Harbor became a vital mid-Pacific location for maritime commerce. Following an $8.5 million rehabilitation, Aloha Tower has been called the Queen of Honolulu Harbor.
