Israelis shatter turnout records as Netanyahu fights to stay in power

JERUSALEM >> Israelis surged to the polls today at a pace that shattered records, to pass wartime judgment on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in what voters described as the most consequential election in the nation’s history. Israeli voters have surged to the polls, setting records in what voters describe as the most significant election in the country's history. The Central Elections Committee reported that 55.7% of eligible voters had already cast their ballots in the first nine hours of voting, a record by that point in the day. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policies have been divisive at home and have led to international isolation. His main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, aims to unseat him with the support of parties on the right and center. If neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkott can form a governing coalition, Netanyahu could stay on as caretaker until another election is held. The election turns on accountability for the security failures of October 7, 2023, Israel's deadliest day.
