Carpenters political spending exceeds all other campaigns
With a week to go before the November general election, political spending in Hawaii has reached a new high, and most of it is coming from one source. The Carpenters Union political action committee, For a Better Tomorrow, is setting records for spending in support of candidates and is also supporting a PAC supporting the RISE bonds constitutional amendment question. Maui Mayor Richard Bissen responded to the spending by For aBetter Tomorrow in support his opponent, Maui County Council member Yuki Lei Sugimura. The PAC reported spending $1.9 million to support Sugimura and another $500,000 on four County Council candidates. The union has also contributed $2 million to RISE Together Hawaii PAC, which the carpenters’ union controls, has spent more than $2.8 million. The spending appears legal and has been reported in official filings.
