Kauai police introduce automated license plate reader technology

KPD officials say the new tech is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, strengthen investigative capabilities and improve the department’s ability to respond to criminal activity throughout the island. The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) has introduced automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology. The technology is part of KPD's efforts to enhance public safety, strengthen investigative capabilities, and improve the department's ability to respond to criminal activity throughout the island. ALPR technology captures license plate information from vehicles passing designated locations and helps investigators identify vehicles potentially associated with criminal investigations. Unlike traditional surveillance cameras, ALPR cameras do not provide continuous live video monitoring of public areas. KPD officials say the implementation of ALPR is intended to enhance existing investigative methods and develop investigative leads more efficiently. However, access to ALPR data will be restricted to authorized KPD personnel and governed by departmental policies and applicable laws.
