OHA, DHHL sign deal to build Kakaako Makai housing

The project is possible because DHHL can override the law against residential development on the site. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) have signed an agreement to build housing in Kakaʻako Makai, Hawaii. This move breaks through a prohibition against residential development on the property. OHA owns nine parcels covering 29 acres and has owned the land since 2012 when then-Gov. Neil Abercrombie transferred it to settle state debts. So far, plans are for a 200-foot multi-tower, 400-unit complex for eligible Native Hawaiian families. The project is possible because DHHL can override the law against residential developments on the site. However, Sen. Sharon Moriwaki of the area has called for the state to take the land back and give the agencies other properties instead.
