Column: Food security aids the entire community
Every day, Hawaii’s farmers work to produce food for our communities. At the same time, thousands of local families struggle to put enough food on the table. These challenges may seem separate, but they are closely connected. Oahu voters are considering a proposal to establish a dedicated City Food Security Fund, which would allocate 0.5% of existing real property tax revenues annually to improve access to locally grown or produced food, strengthen Oahu's food supply and improve food security. The fund would not create a new tax or require an increase in property tax rates. The initiative aims to support programs that strengthen connections between local farmers and families, improve access and build a more reliable local food supply. The Hawai'i Food Bank Hui report found that 1 in 4 Honolulu County households experienced food insecurity during the study period. Since 2020, the program has invested over $13.5 million in more than 40 farms and food hubs distributing over 11 million pounds of locally produced food and proteins.
