Heavy rain, possible flooding expected

Hawaii could see widespread heavy rain and possible flooding beginning Tuesday as an unusual low-pressure system pulls an exceptionally moist mass of tropical air north toward the islands, according to the National Weather Service. An unusual low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rain and possible flooding to Hawaii starting Tuesday, bringing up to 8 inches of rain over a 72-hour period. The National Weather Service is working to identify which islands and areas could receive the most rainfall. The system is not a Kona low or a tropical system, but is associated with a surface trough of low pressure drawing tropical moisture northward. The rainfall is expected primarily to affect windward and mountainous areas, but forecasters cannot rule out significant rain on leeward sides of the islands. The weather service has issued a hydrologic statement warning of potential flooding but has not yet issued a flood watch. The amount of moisture moving toward Hawaii is at the 99th percentile for this time of year, meaning it is near the highest levels typically observed.
