New play ‘Kupua’ offers fresh take on folktales
When Kumu Kahua Theatre’s production of “Kupua” opens Thursday, audiences will see a new interpretation of the Hawaiian folktale-inspired play first staged in 2001, with original mele and hula adding a richer cultural dimension to the production. A new play, "Kupua," by Haili'opua Baker, is set to debut at Kumu Kahua Theatre in a new interpretation of the Hawaiian folktale-inspired play. The play is a modern retelling of two Hawaiian folktales from the "Folktales of Hawaii" book by Mary Kawena Pukui. The original mele and hula have been added to the production, adding a richer cultural dimension. Playwright Baker, director of the University of Hawai‘i's Hawaiian Theatre Program (Hana Keaka) at Manoa, wrote the mele for the 25th-anniversary production and created their melodies. The production also features an original hula by Baba Tavares and Ikaika Mendez.
