Carpenters’ $12M political spending exceeds all other campaigns
With a week to go before the general election, political spending in Hawaii has reached a new high, and most of it is coming from one source. The carpenters union political action committee, For a Better Tomorrow, has set records for spending in support of candidates and is also supporting a PAC supporting the RISE bonds constitutional amendment question. The PAC reported spending $1.9 million on Maui County Council member Yuki Lei Sugimura and another $500,000 on four County Council candidates. Maui Mayor Richard Bissen responded by questioning who is behind the spending and what do they expect in return? The Carpenters Market Recovery Fund and its union PAC have contributed $2 million to RISE Together Hawaii PAC, which the union controls, has spent more than $2.8 million. The spending appears legal and has been reported in official filings.
