Hawaii Island mechanic loses $150K in tools and equipment in shop fire
A fire destroyed a Fern Forest mechanic’s shop on Sept. 26, wiping out decades of tools and equipment. Doug Maki, a Hawaii Island mechanic, lost an estimated $150,000 in tools and equipment after a fire destroyed his shop in Fern Forest. The 64-year-old man had been collecting tools since he was 16 and had been helping others in the community for years. The fire destroyed Maki's tools, solar equipment, and other belongings, including a motorized bicycle and mini bike. It left him without keys to his own vehicles and those belonging to customers. Despite the loss, Maki remains positive and says he will not let life get him down. A customer has started a GoFundMe to help Maki recover from the fire.
