HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu police are asking for witnesses after a man’s body was found near a busy Punchbowl intersection with suspicious injuries.

David Dodd’s body was found a week ago Thursday on the H-1 freeway near Captain Cook Avenue and Emerson Street.

Law enforcement sources say a man walking by around 6 a.m. saw the body of the 61-year-old behind a fence in a strip of grass that was no more than two feet wide.

Police confirm that Dodd had suspicious injuries to his head.

“What is he doing in this area?” How did he bear these wounds?’ said HPD Crimestoppers Sgt. Chris Kim.

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.”

Investigators also want to know what happened to Dodd’s bike.

An HPD memo obtained by HNN shows a grainy photo of the victim in the area just hours before Dodd’s body was found. In the photo Dod has a green and white bicycle.

Residents and people who frequent the neighborhood say the area has really gone downhill in recent decades.

They add that they no longer feel safe.

“Come back here at night, you’ll see all kinds of activities. They have a lot of addicts. It was in this parking lot that they sold drugs,” said a resident who did not want to be named.

He said he has family members who live on a high floor overlooking the view.

He called the incident tragic, but not surprising.

“There were a lot of problems,” he said. “Until I am surprised by this. (I) not at all.”

As of Thursday afternoon, HPD confirmed that the case is still being classified as an accidental death.

Meanwhile, investigators want to talk to anyone who knew Dodd.

“If you know anything about his history – where he’s dating, any partners, friends, family, maybe you know someone he’s had a bad history with – let us know. Call Crimestoppers Honolulu,” said Kim.
