MOLOKAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui Police and the FBI are investigating after human remains were found Friday on Molokai.
Residents on the small island are worried a killer could be on the loose.
A Molokai resident, who asked to remain anonymous, snapped photos of federal agents at the home of Kaunakakai resident Timothy Webb, 77, last Friday.
The resident also said a woman was seen in handcuffs.
Maui police officials say Webb was reported missing in February by a concerned acquaintance who hadn’t heard from him since December. They said Webb was last seen at his home in November.
“If FBI was here with this case, I mean, then it’s more than what anybody is saying or knows about. That’s taking it to another degree with the FBI because that’s some serious stuff,” said another Molokai resident who asked to remain anonymous.
Residents said they are afraid to speak publicly out of fear of retaliation. But they want the community to know what’s going on.
“I’m hearing that a body was found buried in a yard,” said the resident. “What’s concerning is that a body was found buried. So, who is involved? Who did it? Do we have someone roaming our community able to do this kind of stuff and just be amongst us? I don’t think that’s safe at all.”
MPD officials confirmed human remains were recovered at a Kaunakakai residence on Friday. They said the remains are still pending a positive identification, the circumstances are under investigation and more information will be released later.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Steven Merrill said the FBI stands ready to support their law enforcement counterparts by offering supplementary manpower and specialized resources when requested.
“It’s alarming. We’re such a small island, a small community and to have something like this happen. I mean, how safe is safe,” the resident said.
Residents hope authorities will release more details as soon as they are able to because the small, tight-knit community is on edge.
