Hawaii's Department of Law Enforcement hopes stricter laws will reduce the use of illegal fireworks after a deadly New Year's Eve incident that left six people, including a 3-year-old boy, dead. The director of the department, Mike Lambert, has seen decreased activity due to the increased enforcement and increased searches at all ports. State Representative Scot Matayoshi, who authored two anti-fireworks bills, said police can issue $300 tickets to those who shoot off fireworks, and repeat offenders could face prison time for felony crimes. As of earlier this month, police have issued 10 fireworks citations.
