Kakaako residents, businesses brace for next phase of rail construction

The next stop for rail construction is along Halekauwila Street, between Richards and Cooke streets. The next phase of rail construction in Kakaako, Hawaii, is set to begin with a significant amount of noise and road closures over the next several years. A less than three-quarter mile stretch of Halekauwila Street from Richards Street to Cooke Street will be transformed into a building zone, with pedestrians and drivers expected to see several road closures in the coming weeks. Concerns about noise disruption have been raised by businesses and residents alike. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation CEO, Lori Kahikina, noted that the work will occur mostly during weekdays but is permitted to go 24/7 if the work needs to be accelerated. The Department of Health has restrictions on noise levels in the evening, and Kahikine emphasized that businesses will still have access to businesses. Construction is expected to continue through December 2030.
