Decades-long family mystery leads to Kalaupapa in new HIFF short film
Ako said the search began in 2016 when her cousin Paul asked her to take over the family genealogy search. A local woman's search for her great-grandmother led to a new independent short film, PiliHou: Finding Helen. The 15-minute short was produced by former Hawaii news anchor Diane Ako and Martha Shade, director and executive producer of the film and Owner of Martha Shade Productions. The search began in 2016 when Ako's cousin, Paul, initiated a family genealogy search and confirmed that her great grandmother was exiled to Kalaupapa. The film will be featured at the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) in 2026. After its HIFF run, it will make its international premiere in Sydney, Australia, at the Pasifika Film Festival on Nov. 29.
