Hawaiian homes planned in urban core in Kakaako

A new deal between the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Department of Hawaiian Homelands is looking to expand housing opportunities for kanaka maoli near Kaka'ako's waterfront properties. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) and Department of Hawaiian Home Lands are partnering to develop as many as 400 homestead condos in Kakaako, Hawaii. The move comes as the state Legislature has banned residential development in Kka'ako Ma Kai, largely for out-of-state investors, despite the current housing shortage. The Department of Hawaii Home Lands (DHHL) has independent authority to develop housing for Native Hawaiian beneficiaries under state law. The 3-acre parcel is part of lands OHA received from the state in 2012 to settle a debt for unpaid public land trust revenue. However, redevelopment must still receive government approval.
