HONOLULU (KHON2) — It’s been nearly a month since we all made our New Year’s resolutions. Have you been good about keeping yours?

Probably, but studies have shown that by March only 30% of those who made resolutions are still working on keeping them.

So, KHON2.com sat down with Josh Kanakaʻole the general manager for 24-Hour Fitness located in Mililani.

Kanakaʻole got his degree in Exercise Sports Science from the University of Hawaiʻi. For a time, he was with the Parks and Recreations Department in Honolulu where he was creating their kūpuna fitness program.

He also collaborated with Mid-Pacific Institute where he was their strength and conditioning coach and was an assistant basketball coach. Once he completed his degree, he joined the 24-Hour Fitness team where he was a personal trainer before he became a personal trainer manager.

Since then, he moved to continent, went through COVID and realized he wanted to be closer to his ʻohana and the kūpuna in his life. He moved back to Oʻahu a couple of years ago and has since moved into management.

“So, my job was to develop personal trainers to hop on to train different clients with different skill sets and different fitness goals, whether it be Weight Loss and Muscle Gain, whether it be you know, improving their balance their stability,” explained Kanakaʻole. “So, prior to becoming a general manager, I was a personal trainer and a fitness manager for a very long time.”

Kanakaʻole said that they get lots of folks coming in January who are looking for help with their New Year’s resolutions. And his mission has been to help them on this journey.

“We have a lot of different members here with a lot of different fitness goals,” revealed Kanakaʻole. “It is the New Year’s and so you’re gonna see a lot of individuals with fitness goals like losing weight gaining muscle. We also see individuals with fitness goals like improving balance, stabilit; and they also want to just live healthier, fitter lives.”

With this in mind, Kanakaʻole caters his gym’s focus to provide complimentary customized training sessions that allows members to experience their options and determine the best course that will ensure they successfully reach their goals throughout the year.

“In that training session, they’re able to meet with a coach in a one-on-one setting and create a customized workout plan for them,” explained Kanakaʻole. “That helps them reach their fitness goals.”

Kanakaʻole went on to explain that besides the standard gym, 24-Hour Fitness offers lots of amenities that are part of the total gym package. Did we mention that you don’t have to buy their offerings in a piecemeal fashion? The membership comes with all they have to offer.

“Some other amenities we have are our classes, which are included with our membership,” said Kanakaʻole. “We’ll have yoga, pilates, Zumba, cycle classes, a lot of different amenities.”

This particular location of 24-Hour Fitness has recently gone through a remodel to make the gym experience sleeker and more engaging.

“We recently renovated this facility, too,” said Kanakaʻole. “So, we have an outside Trinity Turf area for a lot of people who want to do functional training. We also have a private personal training area designated for members and personal training clients.”

This personal training room doesn’t have mirrors and you have access to one-on-one training from someone who will work with you to reach your goals.

If you are considering dipping your toes into the gym fitness world, Kanakaʻole has some tips to help get you started.

“Keep it simple,” he said. “Make sure that your goals are very attainable, that they’re tangible and consistent. So, what that means is you can do things like get your gym bag ready the night before you go to work the next day so that way you don’t have to worry about it. Having a specific routine set out in place prior to going to the gym versus kind of just going to the facility and see what’s available and kind of just winging it will ensure you are more successful in reaching your goals.”

He went to explain more.

“Having your snacks and having your lunch already premade will help a lot,” explained Kanakaʻole. “Typically, we know that when you eat out, you don’t really control the calories or the ingredients that you consume. So having food already premade prior to your next day can be very helpful because it allows you to control the caloric intake that you’re consuming on a day-to-day basis. And drink lots of water, right?”

Most importantly, Kanakaʻole said that fitness doesn’t have to be another day in the office.

“Fitness should be fun; fitness should be simple,” he said. “It’s not necessarily rocket science, per se. But having a fitness coach will be beneficial for you, especially in the beginning stages. When people start their fitness journey, they want to see results and they want to see results that maintain their motivation. So, keep the goal simple and make it easy by doing small, simple things that facilitate your journey.
