Motorcyclist killed in Big Island’s 12th traffic fatality of 2024

A 26-year-old Volcano man was driving in a 2002 Toyota pickup when it collided with a 2007 Honda motorcycle, which was found unresponsive and transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m. The Toyota pickup operator was not injured but was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide and operating under the influence of an intoxicant. The incident remains under investigation by the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Big Island experienced its 12th traffic fatality of 2024 after a motorcyclist was killed in Hilo.

On Friday, Big Island police opened an investigation for a two-vehicle traffic collision in Hilo, on Kalanianaole Street between Kauhane Avenue and Pua Avenue.

HPD responded to the collision at 11:39 p.m. Reports said a 26-year-old Volcano man was reversing out of a driveway in a 2002 Toyota pickup before it collided with a 2007 Honda motorcycle.

The two vehicles collided on Kalanianaole Street where the 26-year-old male motorcyclist from Hilo was found unresponsive. Officials transported the man to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Reports said the Toyota pickup operator was not injured but was “arrested for first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.”

He remains in custody at Hilo Police Station for further investigation.
