Former University of Hawaii men’s basketball assistant coach Chris Acker has been officially named the new head coach at Long Beach State.

The Beach will be the first Division I head coaching job of Acker’s coaching career.

Acker, who played collegiately at Chaminade from 2003 to 2004, declared for the NBA Draft after his junior season but was not selected.

After coaching West Los Angeles College from 2013 to 2015, he joined Eran Ganot’s initial staff at Hawaii before departing for Boise State in 2017. He was at San Diego State as an assistant from 2019 to 2024.

At Long Beach State, Acker will reunite with athletic director Bobby Smitheran, who was at San Diego State until the summer of 2023.

Smitheran famously fired longtime LBSU head coach Dan Monson prior to the Big West Tournament in March, which the Beach went on to win.

Acker and the Beach will compete against Hawaii at least twice a year as both are members of the Big West.
