A pair of former University of Hawaii baseball standouts took the mound in the Cleveland Guardians’ 8-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, a true rare occasion in the program’s history.

Cade Smith, who made his MLB debut over the weekend, continued his hot start with a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout. In 4.1 innings, he has yet to allow a run, giving up just one hit to go with his nine strikeouts.

Meanwhile, with the Mariners down 8-0 in the ninth, utility player Josh Rojas pitched a scoreless ninth.

It is just the third time in MLB history that a pair of former UH players faced each other in the same game.

On June 8, 1988, Mike Campbell pitched 4.1 innings for the Seattle Mariners while Chuck Crim tossed 3.2 innings for the Milwaukee Brewers in a 8-7 win for the Brewers.

On June 6, 1991, Bruce Walton pitched one inning in a 9-8 win for the Oakland Athletics over the Milwaukee Brewers. Crim was the losing pitcher, surrendering the winning run in his one inning.
