Punahou alumnus and University of Arkansas freshman Nolan Souza has made his presence felt early, where the middle infielder is displaying the tools that made him a pro prospect and coveted recruit.

At 24-3, the Razorbacks are currently the No. 1 team in the country. Souza has played in 17 games, starting 15 of them. He’s currently hitting .311, tied for second on the team with four home runs, including a towering grand slam that was measured at 458 feet in a 13-0 win over Arkansas State on Tuesday.

“When I hit it, I didn’t even feel it off the bat and I just saw it go,” Souza said after the game. “It was just a really good feeling and I was just really happy that I could get a good swing off and connect with it.”

While Souza has continued to produce on the field, perhaps his largest adjustment to college baseball so far has been the weather, where temperatures were in the mid-40s in Fahrenheit with 15 MPH winds.

“I mean, the cold is not fun. I’ve never been in the cold before,” said the Oahu-reared Souza. “I’ve never experienced a real winter or anything and I thought once it got warm, we were done with the cold. So this cold coming back, it’s kind of weird, but we’ll get through it.”

Also on the Arkansas roster is Baldwin alumnus and shortstop Wehiwa Aloy, who has started all 27 games, hitting .277 while sharing the team lead with six home runs.
