HONOLULU (KHON2) — It’s a tale as old as time. Two teams, two days, but only one can be the winner.

Hawaii Pacific University Sharks and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans are going head-to-head this weekend, but while the bar has been set high to see who is truly Hawaii’s best D-2 tennis team, this match has some even higher stakes.

“Were here today at the Kailua Racquet Club filming with Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team as part of our show the rivalries presented by LG,” said Kellen Dengler, executive producer of LG Electronics x NCAA docu-series ‘The Rivalries’.

Since their pilot episode, The Rivalries has scoured the nation looking for the biggest sports rivalries in D-2 and D-3 NCAA athletics.

These two teams captured a unique view of what a rivalry can be.

“What we’ve heard a whole lot continuously in the start of this process is that it’s going to be the most ‘aloha rivalry’ to exist,” Dengler added.

HPU said the players carry a unique commodore between each other that shows true to Hawaii’s spirit, off the court that is.

“Once we all get on the court it gets really intense,” said HPU student athletes Jakub Beran. “We expect them to come out very strong, especially with the support they have but I also believe that we will be able to come out strong.”

UH Hilo and HPU have faced off already with the sharks coming out victorious twice. But with national eyes, it could be anyone’s game.

The rivalries episode is set to air late May.

Regardless of the outcome though, HPU students are excited to have their time as a team etched into their history.

“One day when I show this to my kids I’ll be proud of it and they will be proud of me,” added Beran. “So it will probably be like a highlight of my tennis career…I’m just super excited to see it already…. I just feel like its going to be great…”

The Rivalries crew will travel to UH Hilo next to continue filming before the monumental first serve.

UH Hilo and HPU take the court Saturday April 6 at 2 p.m. and Sunday April 7 at 1 p.m. at the University of Hawaii Hilo’s tennis courts.
