HONOLULU (KHON2) — The trial for a 2022 Pearl City murder and arson case is underway. On Thursday, witnesses recounted the night of the alleged murder and the bizarre interactions they had with the defendant.

Scott DeAngelo is accused of killing Demond Cox, after Cox’s body was found in a Pearl City apartment in February 2022. Court records revealed the two were acquaintances. Government witnesses took the stand Thursday and one witness, who lived in the complex, said he could hear arguing from a nearby unit.

“When you say arguing what do you mean,” asked Kyle Mesa, a Honolulu Deputy Prosecutor.

“Like it sounded like two people arguing back and forth and stuff,” said Eugene Cambra, a government witness.

The witness identified the voices he heard as DeAngelo and Cox and said the argument escalated. He added, he even heard glass breaking.

“Did you hear any noises other than glass breaking or arguing coming from that area,” asked Mesa.

“I thought I heard some fireworks going off in the unit. I saw the screen door was closed, but the regular door was kind of open, and saw a little fire in the living room,” said Cambra.

Meanwhile, a neighbor of DeAngelo and Cox testified about his interaction with the defendant that night which included having a gun turned on him.

“He just kept saying ‘get back in the house, get back in the house,'” said Aubrey Burns, a government witness. “Say this is the screen, he was holding it up to the screen that’s what it looked like.”

During cross-examination, DeAngelo’s defense attorney focused on Cambra’s inability to remember certain details as a government witness. The trial will continue on Friday.
