HONOLULU (AP) — Mike Lambert heard fewer illegal fireworks exploding in his suburban Honolulu neighborhood in the months after a chain of blasts at a house party last New Year's Eve led to the deaths… Hawaii's Department of Law Enforcement Director, Mike Lambert, has seen fewer illegal fireworks exploding in his suburban Honolulu neighborhood since the New Year's Eve tragedy that led to six deaths, including a 3-year-old boy. This year, authorities have implemented stricter laws in response to the tragedy, including $300 tickets for those who shoot off fireworks, repeat offenders and those whose actions cause serious injury or death could face prison time for felony crimes. The new laws were created after a series of blasts at a house party led to the deaths of six people, including the boy, left more than a dozen people with severe burns. An amnesty event last month saw people turn in 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of illegal fireworks and increased searches at all ports, as well as increased enforcement.
