Waialua volunteers clear mangroves along Kiikii Stream to help prevent flooding

Volunteers joined a community-led effort to clear over a mile of mangroves along Ki'iki'i Stream, aiming to improve water flow and reduce flooding. More than 40 volunteers from Waialua, Hawaii, took part in a community-led effort to clear mangroves along Ki’iki’i Stream, a waterway known to overflow during heavy rain. The effort involved residents, farmers, heavy equipment operators, and volunteers from Team Rubicon to remove vegetation and debris blocking the stream. The goal is to improve water flow, reduce flooding and clear over a mile of mangroaves along the stream to its outlet at the ocean. Local residents Kalei Gamiao and his father Derek Gamiao led the effort, which took years to secure permission from the landowners, Gilman Estate. The urgency to clear the stream increased during Kona low storms in March. State Reps. Amy Perruso and Sean Quinlan, along with Honolulu City Council Member Matt Weyer, also contributed to the effort by donating more than $2,000 in fuel for the machinery.
