HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - There is a relatively new sport that’s growing in popularity in the world of competitive sailing — it’s called foil sailing.

And WASZP class foil sailboats are bringing more young people into the sport. The smaller class of watercraft can propel sailors up to 25 knots on the water.

This year, an international sailing regatta is bringing sailors from around the world to Kaneohe Bay on March 24 to 31.

”We have more than 30 competitors here from the United States, Canada, Australia, Denmark and Switzerland,” said Pearl Lattanzi, a 23-year-old sailor from Kaimuki.

The competition is being hosted at the Kaneohe Yacht Club which is celebrating 100 years in Kaneohe Bay with strong support from America One Racing and local sponsors.

”We’re really excited to have the regatta here at the club,” said Jane Sawyer, Commodore of the Kaneohe Yacht Club.

Sawyer says she wants young people to know that her club, like others on Oahu have avenues for first time sailors to try the sport and see if it’s a good fit.

”It’s an amazing sport that can teach you so much more than just sailing. It helps you develop discipline and a strong work ethic,” added Sawyer.
