NWS breaks down monsoon trough threatening Hawaii

Hawaii is bracing for heavy rain and potential flooding caused by a rare monsoon trough and an intense El Niño, which may extend the tropical cyclone season beyond its typical November end date. Hawaii is preparing for heavy rain from an unusual monsoon trough associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which is expected to move over the top of the state. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecaster Derek Wroe described this as "exceptionively rare" and "exceedingly rare". The strong El Niño year is also responsible for many low-pressure systems forming near Hawaii, including the short-lived tropical cyclone Olana, which is embedded in the larger band of low pressure and moisture. The current flood watch is in effect for the next 24 to 36 hours, but there is the potential for it to be extended due to the potential extension of the season.
