How new federal tuna fraud law will impact Hawaii customers
A new federal law is putting the spotlight on Hawaii’s fishing industry to keep illegally caught tuna out of the marketplace. The Illegal Red Snapper and Tuna Enforcement Act was signed into law by President Donald Trump and was co-introduced by U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz, Ted Cruz, Katie Britt, Tommy Tuberville, and Roger Wicker. The law requires a standard procedure to identify where red snapper and certain tuna species come from, including developing a field test kit that can determine whether fish were caught in U.K. or foreign waters. This follows a state law in July that required retailers to provide more information about ahi's origin, including where the fish was caught. Mike Goto, president of the United Fishing Agency, said that Hawaii’s fishing industry already has detection systems in place and that the new law will further enhance the marketability of its seafood.
