HONOLULU, HI – The Hawaii Executive Collaborative has unveiled a newly rebranded initiative, Climate Hawaii, aimed at accelerating the state’s transition to a resilient, climate-friendly future. Jeff Mikulina, Executive Director of Climate Hawaii, and Duane Kurisu, Chairman of the Hawaii Executive Collaborative, joined Kelly Simek on Living808 to announce the initiative.

Climate Hawaii is a coalition of leaders dedicated to fostering meaningful climate action within organizations and advocating for pro-climate policies. “We help organizations act on climate initiatives internally and systemically, celebrating those who exceed expectations,” Mikulina stated.

Duane Kurisu highlighted that the Hawaiʻi Executive Collaborative (HEC) originated from the Hawaiʻi Executive Conference, where top decision-makers committed to building resilience for Hawaiʻi’s people. “Climate Hawaii is integral to our vision of honoring Hawaiʻi’s Soul and serves as a backbone to amplify the impact of collective leadership across various sectors,” Kurisu emphasized.

Climate Hawaii has garnered support from nearly 50 organizations, including KHON2, which have signed the Climate Pledge. This pledge commits organizations to inventory and reduce their climate pollution, set emission reduction goals, and support systemic climate initiatives. Climate Hawaii is part of a broader initiative, “Rediscovering Hawai’i’s Soul,” a movement to build a shared understanding of Hawai’i’s depth of meaning, history, and value. This effort involves cross-sector collaborations and aims to encapsulate the essence of Hawai’i’s Soul through collective action and trust.

The rebrand to Climate Hawaii includes a new logo featuring the Hawaiian pewa, or butterfly joint, symbolizing unity and repair. “The pewa represents joining diverse groups for a unified climate response and renewal of life, reflecting our mission,” Mikulina explained. The symbolism perfectly captures their initiative of joining together to meaningfully act on Hawaii’s sustainable climate future.
