Derelict Property, Home To Squatters, Plagues Mōʻiliʻili
The developers sought to provide affordable housing. In an unintended way, they did. A proposed condominium building called Ohana Hale, intended to bring 180 units of housing, more than half of them affordable, to Mōʻili, has been blighted by squatters and illegal game rooms. The project received exemptions from permit fees and zoning standards in 2015 and was set to start construction in 2017 before being pushed to 2019, 2020, and then 2024. However, more more than a decade after planning began, construction has not yet begun. Police have responded to 23 nuisance complaints at the property since 2020, including seven in 2026 alone. The property was subject of a search warrant for an illegal gambling investigation in 2025, but no signs of illegal gambling have been found. The owners, MJF Development Corp., are frustrated by squatting and shady activity going on around the property.
