Resident support for tourism falls near record low
Hawaii residents are growing less convinced that tourism’s benefits outweigh its costs, with support for the industry’s overall value falling near a record low as concerns mount over visitor disrespect for Hawaiian culture, natural resources and residents’ quality of life. Hawaii residents are less convinced that tourism’s benefits outweigh its costs, according to the Spring 2026 Resident Sentiment Survey. The survey, which included responses from 1,716 residents, found that 53% of Hawaii residents believe tourism “has brought more benefits than problems,” down from 58% a year earlier. This is among the lowest readings recorded since the survey began nearly four decades ago. The all-time low was 49% in 2021. The study also revealed that 67% of residents believe the state should diversify its economy by investing in industries other than tourism. Concerns have also been raised about visitor disrespect for Hawaiian culture, natural resources and residents' quality of life.
