Kona Historical Society may close due to storms, fewer donations and grants

Kona Historical Society says it may close without $200,000 raised by Dec. 31 as grants decline and costs rise. The Kona Historical Society, a Hawaii Island nonprofit that preserves historical records, may be forced to close due to decreasing donations, grants, impacts from the COVID pandemic and storms. The society, founded in 1976, relied heavily on grants to support its educational and preservation initiatives. However, funds have become harder to obtain and do not keep up with rising operating expenses. Board president Laysan Unger stated that the society is grant-dependent and there are now fewer grants and more applicants. To address the financial challenge, the society launched a $200,000 year-end fundraising campaign with a goal to raise the funds by Dec. 31. If the society closes, it will have to find another organization to preserve the records and educational events.
