Upgrades at DMVs aim to streamline license renewal process
Drivers will also get different temporary documents while permanent cards are made. The Department of Customer Services (DMV) in Hawaii has implemented a system that allows drivers to submit applications and get photos taken at the same counter. Instead of receiving a temporary license, drivers will get back their license with a hole punched through it and a special paper with a special QR code. The new document includes all of the same information, including a QR code, and it must be carried with the old card to validate a renewal. With this new system, new cards will arrive quicker than previously, with customers waiting six to eight weeks for their plastic plastic to arrive in the mail. The upgrades are part of a larger modernization of Hawaii's ID and license card production system. Eventually, most renewals could be done digitally.
