Ala Moana Beach Park Sand Replenishment Gets $7.44M

Ala Moana Beach is getting a $7.44 million sand makeover after years of erosion. Ala Moana Beach Park, a popular stretch that attracts an estimated four million visitors a year, has been awarded $7.44 million by the state Board of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to replenish its sand. The money comes from Green Fee revenue, the state's new climate-focused tourism tax, and represents a partnership between the state and city. The project could place up to 70,000 cubic yards of sand along the beach fronting the park. Since the beach is largely man-made, it will need repeated sand imports and is expected to widen the shoreline once complete. The city had previously allocated $10 million for sand replenishment, but this funding was redirected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
