AI-discovered bugs may soon trigger fresh disruptions, experts say

WASHINGTON >> Advances in artificial intelligence have uncovered a stream of new software vulnerabilities that are almost certain to trigger more disruption along the lines of the outages that percolated across global government websites this week, according to seven cybersecurity professionals who spoke to Reuters. Advance in artificial intelligence (AI) has led to a doubling of the number of digital flaws discovered year-on-year, according to research by VulnCheck, a threat intelligence firm. The firm predicts that new software vulnerabilities are likely to trigger more disruption, following the recent outages across global government websites due to the discovery of weaknesses in PHP, a programming language that powers a significant portion of the internet. Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, warned of additional severe vulnerabilities in other critical software and predicted busy months ahead. The surge in digital vulnerabilities has led some to rush to fix their software in preparation for mass exploitation. However, while all experts agreed that defenders’ timelines were getting shorter, they were split on whether AI would lead to a hacker free-for-all.
