Residents on Oahu’s North Shore take on dredging as lawsuits seek accountability

North Shore residents are spending the weekend bringing heavy machinery to Paukauila Stream to cut back mangroves and clear debris from the banks ahead of the next major storm. Residents on Oahu's North Shore are taking part in a community-organized dredging effort to clear mangroves and clear debris from Paukauila Stream ahead of the next major storm. This comes as residents are suing the City and County of Honolulu over alleged failures to maintain waterways. The lawsuit alleges that years of inadequate stream maintenance and issues with reservoir management contributed to flooding that damaged homes and displaced residents in March. The City and Co of Honolulu, one of the defendants, has filed a third-party complaint against the state arguing it may share responsibility for portions of Kaukonahua Stream, Farrington Highway and a bridge crossing the stream. The governor's office declined to comment on the litigation but noted existing allocations in the state budget.
